Milwaukee County is saying goodbye to a long-time
political figure who, over the twenty years that he has
been a member of the Milwaukee County Board of
Supervisors, has been both colorful and controversial
in his work and his demeanor. County Board Chairman
Lee Holloway has resigned from the board, and will
leave office on April 16.
In addition to rising to the post of Chairman, Holloway
has been --- in the eyes of at least some of his fellow
county supervisors and many board staffers --- the
courthouse bully. He has, on two occasions, gotten
into physical altercations with other supervisors in
his quest to get his way on some matter or other.
he has ridden herd on board staff members, making
it known that he was the big cheese at the office and
that to cross him in any way was not healthy to the
longevity of their jobs. Just two weeks ago Holloway
fired the only legislative staffer of supervisor Nikiya
Harris for "disrespecting" His Lordship. What was this
staffer's transgression, by the way? When asked
about the incident, Holloway would only state that
it was a "personnel matter".
However, some county workers say that it was more
of a personal matter. Some have proffered that the
Chairman was sore about Harris and her staffer,
David Crowley, didn't each fork over $30 to attend
Holloway's farewell event which was held at the
Discovery World Museum and banquet facility
near the end of March. Some courthouse insiders
have intimated that it was more likely that Crowley
ran into Holloway while each was working out at
the downtown YMCA and had not addressed the
County Board chieftain by his title, "Chairman".
Supervisor Harris confronted Holloway about the
firing, but all that he would say was that he was
"disrespected" by Crowley without going into
any details. The nerve of the knave! Some peasants
don't know the meaning of respect! Horrors!
Under the County Board's regulations, the super-
visors pick their own staffers but the staffers in
fact report to the board chairman. So via this
stipulation Holloway has the power to remove
any board staffers that he dislikes, apparently
for any reason at all, and not have to divulge
that reason. This is a rule that the County Board
may want to rethink with the departure of his
nibs Holloway. At least Harris can soon bring her
dismissed aide, Crowley, back to work without
repercussions.
Holloway's high-handed manner was not restricted
to the office, either. The owner of some rental pro-
perties in Milwaukee's inner city area, he has clashed
often with some of his tenants who have complained
about the poor conditions of the buildings that they
live in. Decaying structures, deficiently-working
heat and similar complaints have not only gone
ignored by Holloway but he has been accused of
sending some representatives of his to visit the
dissatisfied tenants to, shall we say, persuade
them to ease up on their criticisms of their rental
homes in Holloway's buildings and cut their
landlord some slack. Sound like slumlord behavior
to me, my fabulous readers, how about you?
So we have the portrait of a person who holds some
positions of power, and has enjoyed the inherent
power of said positions a bit too much; Lee Holloway
had gotten drunk on that power like a party reveler
imbibing strong liquor, and had developed an inflated
sense of self-importance over time. An all too familiar
story from the realm of politics. Add to that his feuds
with some of his constituents over matters pertaining
to taxation and spending (yes, Holloway has also
fought with Tea Party activists on more than a few
occasions), and his opposition to then-County
Board Executive Scott Walker and Walker's cutting
of both, thereby making it easier on Milwaukee
County homeowners regarding their property
taxes, enabling them to keep and stay in their homes,
as well as Holloway's recent arguments with current
Executive Chris Abele (a political liberal, like
Holloway) over some of the same subjects(!),
and you have a picture of a self-serving pol who
thinks that those around him (constituents included)
should cater to his majesty's whims, rather than work
in cooperation with peers and to serve the needs of
those who elected him. Your faithful Peasant says
goodbye and good riddance to Lee Holloway, and
may he be replaced by someone who knows his
or her role and does not get caught up in the cushy,
clubby, comfy trappings of the halls of power.
Because this is the biggest problem with government
officials, and the biggest obstacle to responsive,
responsible, efficient government.
Lee Holloway's departure from the Milwaukee County
Board of Supervisors is addition by subtraction. The
restoration of integrity and fairness is an addition
gained by the subtraction of Holloway from the
County Board.

Something Different
My fabulous readers:
I have a little treat to share with you today!
Just click this link below and listen to a very
beautiful patriotic song from Scotland,
"Scots Wha Hae", sung by Scottish folk
singing star Dick Gaughan. As you know,
I have a great love of the music of Ireland
and Scotland, as I love Celtic music and
culture, and I thought I'd treat you to a
little something out of the ordinary!
This song is featured in a video that I found
on YouTube recently. Enjoy!

P.S. (4/17/12): Your faithful Peasant regretfully avers
there is a technical problem with the link to the video of the
song, "Scots Wha Hae" that I put up on this posting. You can,
my understanding readers, still access and enjoy this recording
of "Scots Wha Hae" as sung by Dick Gaughan by going to
YouTube and entering the title of the song into the web site's
browser (you can also add "Dick Gaughan", although it is not
necessary). You will be taken to a page where there will be
choices on the right side of the screen when you are on that page;
just look for "Dick Gaughan Scots Wha Hae" and click on that
option. The video will load and play for you. The Peasant
apologizes for any inconvenience and confusion which you
may have encountered in trying to access this recording via
the link provided in this post. MEM

Keeping You Up to Date
Your busy Peasant has some exciting news for you, my wonderful
readers; I shall share with you what I have been doing with my
time away from this blog and you all.
I have been working on getting my driver's license! At the age
of 54 I am finally going to drive! Here's how this came about:
I have started doing some part-time work, in addition to my
enterprises (one of which is this blog). I am a part-time member
of the groundskeeping crew at St. Mary's Catholic Church of
the Visitation in Elm Grove, Wisconsin, and have been in this
position since last autumn. It has been put to me that I can be
of even more service to the church in my capacity if I were to
obtain a driver's license so that I can drive one of the pickup
trucks in the course of my duties. As I have been unable
to find any positions in my normal career field (financial
services) or in any secondary career areas, I have cast my
net into other parts of the sea of career opportunities, so I
was offered this work by a friend who is in a prominent
position at St. Mary's. Last week I received my temporary
license, or Learner's Permit upon passing the written
driver's education exam. In the afternoon that same day I
began my behind-the-wheel training under the coaching and
supervision of one of my crewmates who is an experienced,
and of course, licensed driver. After I log the state-required
minimum of 30 hours at the wheel in this manner I can try for
my actual license by taking the road test. I feel like a boy
with a new toy!
In time I shall purchase a second-hand car to get myself
around town with, so I won't have to rely on the local buses
so much anymore. I never objected to riding the buses, but
it's no fun when you're waiting for one in bitter cold or very
wet weather, and even less fun when the bus you need either
comes late or, and this has happened to your intrepid Peasant
on occasion and even just yesterday (!), the bus doesn't come
at all. Besides, it will be a thrill to slip the chain of the bus
route schedules and be on my own travel schedule! And I
can avail myself of fun places to visit that I have needed
a friend with a car to get to. If the place you want to go to
is not on a bus line, if you're without a car and no one can
run you out there then it's too bad, so sad. Furthermore,
there are the career and social functions that I can easily
attend with my own set of wheels!
St. Mary's is even going to assist me in getting a second-hand
car, and of course I will be covered by their insurance when I'm
on the job. Your grateful Peasant wishes to thank his generous
friends at St. Mary's for this life-changing benefit! It is an
example of friends helping a friend and vice-versa; one hand
washing the other. And there is NO GOVERNMENT
PROGRAM involved! The private sector comes through in
grand fashion! We peasants do for ourselves and each other;
it is the American way! Your soon-to-be-more-mobile
Peasant shall keep you, my beloved readers, up to date on
my progress toward my driver's license and my car in the
days and weeks to come. And we shall get back down to
business in a few days with the events in the realm of politics.
A final note: your favorite Peasant shall be, until further
notice, posting on Thursdays or Fridays each week, as my
schedule now affords me this new space of time to get
together with you for our weekly visits. If anything truly
juicy breaks near the weekend I shall post on both
Thursday and Friday! How's that?
Meantime, to my fellow Wisconsinites: tomorrow is the
day of our presidential primary. Do go to your polling
places and vote for the conservative, or as near to conser-
vative GOP candidate of your choice to send against
Obama in November. And if your favored candidate
fails to win the party's nomination, suck it up, set your
jaws, and turn out to vote for the Republican nominee,
whoever it will be, so that we can end the nightmare
that is the reign of the most nightmarish president that
we as a nation have ever countenanced. It is imperative!
We do not have the luxury of hurt feelings over someone
other than our chosen candidates winning the party nod
to head up the ticket when Election Day rolls around,
staying home to assuage ourselves or to quietly protest.
Know this: if you don't vote in November for the candidate
who clinches the nomination then Obama wins! The elitist
pig-in-chief gets another four years to wreak more havoc
on our economy, our liberties, and our lives! We can,
and should, build toward the government we want with
the leadership we want right NOW! We can find
someone whom more of us will find to our liking in
the time down the road; for now, let's concentrate on
replacing Obama with someone with whom we have
more ideas and values which we share, someone who
will at least listen to us when we voice our concerns,
someone who will not be hell-bent on taking our dear
country in a direction in which we do not want to go.
I say this not just for the benefit of my fellow Badger
Staters but for all of my fellow Americans who are
disgusted with the kind of leadership and resultant
government which we are chafing and straining under.
Be strong. Focus on the Big Picture. Stay focused.
And always have confidence!
See you soon!

Watch This Video; It Speaks for Itself!
My beloved readers, a politically aware friend e-mailed me
this link with a brief description of its subject matter and
related content. Apparently, GOP presidential candidate
Mitt Romney's "Romneycare", his state health care plan
that he got passed and installed in Massachusetts while
he was that state's governor, actually has an individual
mandate requiring one to buy health insurance under severe
penalty or penalties for non-compliance. Romney has
been denying everywhere he has gone while on the
campaign trail that he did not put any such mandate into
his health care plan but this video shows him saying
--- in a PowerPoint presentation no less --- that there
IS a requirement to buy some form of health insurance
under his Massachusetts plan. And the video also has
another surprise; President Obama's Obamacare plan
(the Affordable Health Care Act), although it has a
mandate to buy health insurance, actually has NO
enforcement mechanism, unlike Romneycare! I just
HAD to break away from my career-enhancing work,
which I told you I was going to engage in, when we
last were together at this venue; although I needed
some critical time away from being with you, my
great and grand readers, I just could not wait to get
this item to you, it is that important!
Sound too fantastic, too bizarre, too far-fetched to
be true? Watch this video of the "Rewrite" segment
of Lawrence O'Donnell's "The Last Word" show
on MSNBC. I know, this network is a left-wing
hotbed in TV circles, but the video of Romney
admitting to the mandate in Romneycare back in
his 2008 presidential campaign and his PowerPoint
presentation on his health care plan underscore
his flip-flop on the issue along with his denials in
this year's campaign about ever having had, or had
been in favor of said mandate. And listen to the
revelation of there being no enforcement means
in Obama's health plan; you will wonder why Obama
and the Democrats put this controversial mandate into
their health care program and not have a means of
making it stick!
Anyway, click this link to watch the startling video:

right are right about him after all!

Saint Patrick's Day Greetings!
Your increasingly busy Peasant is letting you, my fantastic
readers, know that I must take a break this week due to
the most demanding, uncompromising, merciless schedule
that I have had for any given week in recent memory.
For one thing, I shall be engaged in an activity which will
have a tremendous impact on my career prospects. I shall
share the details with you after I complete my career-
enhancing mission, but know for the time being that I
require a certain block of time and must give my undivided
attention to what I have set out to do. But fear not; your
determined Peasant is up to the task at hand!
For another thing, this coming Saturday is Saint Patrick's
Day. Your favorite Peasant being part-Irish, I shall be
celebrating the Irish saint's special day (and the evening
of it) at my favorite local Irish pub, O'Donoghue's Irish
Pub in Elm Grove, a lovely little village near where I grew
up, having lived in New Berlin and later in Brookfield as a
boy. If ever you are in the Milwaukee area, stop in at
O'Donoghue's and enjoy an authentic Irish pub with a
great choice of ales and beers, the big feature being
Guinness ale! If you can come on a Friday night,
you're bound to find some excellent live entertainment
from some local singers and/or musicians performing,
offering some wonderful songs and tunes of The
Emerald Isle. I shall be enjoying the drinks, the food,
the entertainment, and the camaraderie of my friends who
work there and frequent there on the aforementioned days.
So I Shall be with you all again after my work and my play,
with some new stories to share; there shall be more
items on state Sen. Dale Schultz; he's a RINO for more
than just his vote against AB 426, a/k/a The Mining Bill
which would have given the people of northern Wisconsin
reason to stay in their part of the state. I shall also give
my thoughts on the controversy concerning Rush Limbaugh
and the comments he made regarding a certain reproductive
rights activist. There shall also be attention paid to the latest
developments in the Republican race for the party's
nomination to take on President Obama in November's
election. And there shall be some things to say about the latest
developments with the attempt to recall Wisconsin's Governor
Scott Walker. So there shall be a full slate of news
and commentary to look forward to after Saint Paddy's Day!
But for now, your beloved Peasant has to break away.
So enjoy Saint Patrick's Day and take in a parade or visit
an Irish pub if you can! We'll meet back here after the
big day and take on the political and economic news of
the moment!
Slainte! (Pronounced "SHLANJ", it is the Gaelic word

Wisconsin is Open for Business (Except for Mining)!
Our legislature here in the Badger State had a golden
opportunity to alleviate the chronic unemployment
problem that its northern region suffers from, even in
the best of times. The Assembly did its part to aid
the economically beleaguered folks up north in your
faithful Peasant's home state, but the Senate --- thanks
to the entire Democrat delegation and one (ONE!) Re-
publican --- rejected the measure which would have
given the residents of the aforementioned region of
Wisconsin a sure thing to look forward to, rather
than to attach their hopes to the ephemeral "maybe"
of a half-way decent tourist season, the tourist trade
being the only lucrative business that these struggling
people have. What am I, your observant Peasant,
referring to, you ask? A mining bill which would have
made many new, decent-paying, future-providing jobs
available for our neighbors in the north of our state!
Gogebic Taconite LLC, a major mining company, has
long wanted to build an open air iron ore pit in northern
Wisconsin. The region has a considerable amount of
the ore in its ground, and there is a definite demand
for the ore in U.S. industry. The mine was planned for
Ashland and Iron Counties, and would have created
2,800 jobs in an area where its young people pack up
and leave for places with more career opportunities
besides waiting on tables in town cafes or pumping
gas mainly for visitors who come to do some fishing,
hunting, or camping; there's not as much to do or see
in this section of our state like there is in Milwaukee,
Madison, or Green Bay, urban areas with a greater
number and vast array of sites and activities to enjoy.
And most of our state's industries and their respective
businesses are located in these areas, making for more
jobs and career-building opportunities. Jobs of any kind
are severely limited in quantity and in quality of wages
up there; it's no wonder that as soon as northern Wis-
consin's youngsters graduate from high school they
quickly make tracks for the state's major cities or
cities in other states. And many older residents of
the communities up there see less and less reason to
stick around themselves, seeing the same difficulties
that their children see. Moreover, the proposed mine
would also have made more jobs in Milwaukee and
other Wisconsin cities, as the machinery needed to
build the mine would have been made by manufac-
turers there.
Assembly Bill 426 would have reformed Wisconsin's
permitting process for building the mine, speeding up
the steps so that the it wouldn't have been a few years
but just a few months to get the permits for Gogebic to
start digging. Even though the opponents of this bill
claimed that hastening the permitting process would
have weakened existing environmental protections,
proponents argued that said reforms would have pro-
tected the environment. Some opponents of the bill,
in particular environmental activists, claim that
Gogebic wants to perform strip mining, a method
of mining which would scar and ruin the land for
generations; Gogebic has stated that it has no such
plans to strip mine for iron ore. Others in opposition
have other reasons for their stands; Local Indian
tribes oppose the mine because if it is built more
casinos might get built to accommodate the locals
along with additional people who might settle there
to take the mining jobs, and that would mean com-
petition for the Indian's own casino in or near to
the area. They aren't admitting this publicly,
however, but they do have a casino up there and
they currently have a lock on the gambling and the
entertainment markets in the proposed mining area.
Thanks and praise to Mark Belling, conservative
gabber on WISN 1130AM for pointing this out on
his weekday late afternoon show. He has your
thankful Peasant's gratitude!
The Democrats in the legislature have a highly
partisan political reason for their opposition; the
increase in jobs would benefit Republican Gov.
Scott Walker, whom they are trying mightily to
have recalled and voted out of office. One of the
fallacious mantras they are spouting is that Walker
is actually keeping jobs from being created in or
moving to Wisconsin regardless of his promise
that "Wisconsin is open for business!" If AB 426
were to have become law that would have made
Walker even harder to beat in a recall election,
as one of the Dems' main arguments against Walker
would have been shot down in flames.
The hotly-debated mining bill was passed along
party lines; Republicans enjoy a 20-seat advantage over
Democrats in that chamber. In the Senate, where Repub-
licans hold a 17-16 edge over the Democrats, even one
senator siding on a vote with the opposition party deter-
mines the fate of a bill that is otherwise backed or
opposed entirely by the opposing party; that is what in
fact happened to AB 426. The opposing Republican
senator was Dale Schultz from Richland Center, a town
that is not even located in Northern Wisconsin!
This state senator from is southwestern Wisconsin
district put the kibosh on the economic rebirth of
a part of the state which he does not hail from and whose
citizens he does not represent, putting him at odds with
his party and the governor who was elected from same
said party. What was Schultz' motivation to vote against
the bill which would have prevented the upper part of
Wisconsin from becoming a cluster of ghost towns?
He claims that there was no scientific proof that the
permit process reforms would indeed protect the
environment.
"I would love to vote for a responsible mining bill,"
Schultz stated. "It's my hope, too, that the discussion
would continue." Now what we, my wonderful readers,
are wondering at this juncture is just what does Sen.
Schultz consider to be a "responsible" mining bill?
As far as any actual or potential harm to the environ-
ment resulting from the construction and operation of
an iron mine is concerned, Libertarian blogger
Dr. Tim Nerenz shared his thoughts on such things in
his blog "Moment of Clarity" when he talked about
the mining that took place near his hometown of
Ironwood, Michigan. Dr. Nerenz stated that there
is a beautiful wilderness that is situated right over
the very deposit of iron ore where "1/3 of the nation's
iron was produced over seven decades. 255 million
tons have been taken from that ground and I would
drink from any stream on the range today, just like
I did when I was a kid and the mines were running
full bore." As Dr. Nerenz explained, "If mining really
will ruin the environment forever, it would already
be ruined many times over." He went on to say that
each newly-built mine has benefited from the lessons
learned in the building and operation of the mines
which came before: " ... I can tell you that the safest
and cleanest mine on the planet is the nest one."
An economist, Dr. Nerenz is also familiar with
the mining industry, starting with his days as a
boy in Ironwood.
Gogebic President Bill Williams said in a statement
made right after the vote in the Senate: "Senate rejec-
tion of the mining reforms in Assembly Bill 426 sends
a clear message that Wisconsin will not welcome iron
mining. We get the message. GTAC is ending plans to
invest in a Wisconsin mine. We thank the many people
who have supported our efforts." Gogebic was going
to invest $1.5 billion in northern Wisconsin to bring
mining and good-paying, steady jobs to its people.
The construction and operation of an iron mine in
northern Wisconsin would also have drawn many
other businesses to that area, creating still more badly
needed jobs for its desperate residents. Roads would
have been built. Schools would have built. Hospitals
would have been built. Stores, restaurants, bars,
garages, auto dealers, water treatment plants, homes,
and places of worship would have followed. All of
these things require people to build and maintain them.
But the Senate Democrats and one RINO turned their
thumbs down to facilitating the construction of the
iron ore mine which would have made all of this
possible. They said "No way!" to giving the impov-
erished people of northern Wisconsin an opportunity
to improve the quality of their lives in their towns.
They all figured that they know better about what is
best for that region and its inhabitants. If it means that
the people currently living there have to move to where
there are plentiful jobs, or go on welfare, or simply
starve, then too bad, so sad. After all, what's the suffering
of a few thousand peasants compared to the towering
feeling of these smug elitists fancying themselves as the
champions of the great outdoors in a far-flung part of
the state, far removed from their cozy, cushy environs
in their comfy offices in Madison and their fancy,
clubby bars and bistros where they meet with their
environmental activist patrons and other lefty supporters
who fund their election campaigns to pat each other on the
back and fill one anothers' ears with haughty platitudes
in their little mutual masturbation gatherings!
The actions taken by the Democrats in both chambers of
your angered Peasant's state legislature were despicable
but predictable. So much for their self-trumpeted commit-
ment to working people. But the actions taken by supposed
Republican Sen. Dale Schultz were beneath contempt! This
person is the biggest RINO in Wisconsin and should change
the letter after his name from an R to a D post haste! And the
people in his district should vote him out of office with even
more haste! As for the Democrats in the Capitol, they too
should receive the same fate.
We Wisconsinites need jobs now! We need to turn our state's
economy around now!! We need to elect representatives
to our state legislature who will serve us by helping us to
do these urgent tasks, rather than making us serve their elitist
pals and their elitist whimsies!!! And the hardscrabble life-
weary people of the northern part of our state can best lead
the way.

opportunity to alleviate the chronic unemployment
problem that its northern region suffers from, even in
the best of times.

Andrew Breitbart, R.I.P.
This morning we have lost a courageous investigative
journalist, advocate of freedom, and champion of
conservatism who broadened and emboldened the
way that conservatives fight for their candidates and
their issues: Andrew Brietbart died suddenly while
out for a midnight walk in his neighborhood. He was
but 43.
Breitbart grew up in West Los Angeles, a citadel of
liberalism close in physical and political proximity
to Hollywood. Although he aopted the politics of his
community, he came to question the logic, the soundness,
and the righteousness of liberalism while railing at its
hypocritical inconsistencies, and became a conservative
in his adult years. He followed this up in creating his
online media enterprises, which includes Big Government,
Big Media, Big Labor, Big Hollywood, and Big Education,
in which Brietbart exposed the very things that caused
him to eschew his early liberalism which he saw in
the behavior of these entities.
Investigative journalism was a forte of Brietbart's work;
he sent two undercover reporters to an ACORN office
to expose the organization's illegal dealings which included
assisting pimps and their prostitutes. ACORN has never
recovered from the monumental setback that resulted in
a loss in funding by the federal government. This is not to say
that mistakes were not made: Brietbart was stung over his
videotape of Shirley Sherrod, a black woman who worked
for the Department of Agriculture (USDA) in the South, speaking
at an NAACP dinner in which she told of her being loathe
to help a financially distressed farmer who happened to be
white. The videotape that was produced by Breitbart gave
the impression that Sherrod was in the employ of the
aforementioned department at that time, but in actuality
she was not so employed then. Brietbart made a correction
pointing this out on his website, but his reputation took a
hit --- a considerable one.
However, Andrew Brietbart will be best remembered for
his doing the work that journalists are supposed to do and
should be doing, but for the most part are not. Andrew
Breitbart worked for himself, not for any news organization,
making it impossible for anyone to pressure his employer to
curb Brietbart's journalistic questing. He was his own man;
he took the roses and the bricks, the praise and the condem-
nation, the admiration and the loathing. And through it all,
he continued to bring to us the truth about our main insti-
tutions which we have a right to know, a right which he
acknowledged but the so-called mainstream media arro-
gantly scoff at.
Andrew Brietbart leaves behing a grieving wife and
four grieving children, as well as many greiving admirers.
Rest in peace, Andrew. Your work shall continue.
